BRITISH QUARTET SET FOR BERLIN FLIEGT INTERNATIONAL MATCH

British Athletics have today announced the four athletes set to compete at the Berlin Fliegt international match in the German capital this Saturday (June 22).

Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (club: Sutton & District), Jodie Williams (Herts Phoenix; Stuart McMillan), Harry Coppell (Wigan & District; John Mitchell) and Abigail Irozuru (Sale Harriers Manchester; Tom Cullen) have all been chosen with the men’s and women’s 100m, men’s pole vault and women’s long jump featuring at the Berlin Fliegt this year.

Aikines-Aryeetey will have fond memories of Berlin having anchored the British 4x100m relay team to World Championship bronze in 2009 and European Championships gold last summer, both in the city, while Williams is currently enjoying a fine start to the 2019 season having lowered her 100m personal best to 11.17 last month.

Coppell will line up in the pole vault fresh from bettering his own personal best to 5.50m in Geneva at the weekend with all three former world champions at age-group level. Aikines-Aryeetey and Williams claimed world youth 100m-200m doubles in 2005 and 2009 respectively, both taking world junior 100m gold in 2006 and 2010 respectively too, and Coppell won the world youth title in the pole vault in 2013.

Irozuru meanwhile earns her second British vest of the year having claimed her first in almost seven years at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in March. The British team will compete against the hosts Germany as well as the USA and China as part of the international match, which will see Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport transformed into an athletics arena for the day.
