British Team Titles Provisionally Awarded From 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon

  •  Following the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday 23 April, and following registration and vest checks, we are now able to announce the provisional team results as detailed below.

The 37th edition of the Virgin Money London Marathon, which took place on Sunday 23 April, saw team titles decided alongside individual British accolades, with the times posted by the top three athletes from each club added together to form a combined time.

Belgrave were the men’s team gold medallists, with top finisher Craig Ruddy (Mark Pollard) leading the trio of he, Andrius Jaksevicius and James Williams (Will Cockerell) home as he crossed the line in 2:22:22, a personal best which he won’t have any trouble remembering.

Combined with Ruddy’s time, Jaksevicius’ 2:23:24 and Williams’ 2:30:05 meant the trio’s combined 7:15:51 earned team gold medal status by close to a minute ahead of Kent, whose combined time of 7:16:48 thanks to Russell Bentley, Chris Greenwood, James Bowler scored silver.

Claiming team bronze was Serpentine, and although the combined time of their top three finishers – Jonathan Poole, Tony Payne and Andrew Greenleaf – matched that of Kent, Kent’s first finisher being faster than Poole of Serpentine meant team silver went to Kent.

From Kent and Serpentine’s 7:16:48, there was over an 11 minute gap in combined time back to Cambridgeshire Harriers in fourth with 7:28:05, while Bournemouth (7:29:09) claimed fifth, and Bristol & West sixth (7:33:30).

Metro Aberdeen were the women’s victors in the team event thanks to lifetime best runs from Fiona Brian, Jennifer Elvin and Hazel Wyness, with the collective 8:44:59 clocking comfortably up on Kent, who, like it the men’s team event, claimed silver.

Kent were led home by British Athletics’ international ultra-runner Amy Clements (Peter Boxshall) in 2:39:11, a personal best by exactly one minute, with the supporting pair of Sarah Hanley and Jennifer Smith posting 2:59:49 and 3:08:21 respectively, as the trio achieved 8:47:21 combined.

The distance in time between silver and bronze was considerable as Dulwich claimed the last podium place in 8:59:03. Shona McIntosh (Steve Smythe) the fastest finisher in red and blue in 2:47:52, with support coming from Helen Lister, a 3:05:09 finisher; and Mel Edwards, in 3:06:02.

Fourth place in the team listings went to Team Bath (9:06:00), with Sarah Baxter their leading competitor as shew went inside three hours for the first time with 2:57:20; Serpentine claimed fifth (9:14:48); while Richmond & Zetland (9:17:31) were sixth.
