BRITISH U20 RECORD HOLDER CHALMERS AND EUROPEAN LEADER HUNT HEAD MANNHEIM SELECTIONS

British Under-20 400m hurdles record holder Alastair Chalmers (coach: James Hillier; club: Guernsey) and European U20 100m & 200m leader Amy Hunt (Joe McDonnell; Charnwood) will headline a full 20-strong British team for the Mannheim Gala in Germany this weekend (29-30 June).

Having already been named on the British team for the European U20 Championships this morning, European leader Chalmers will head to Germany and take on an international field to fine-tune his preparation leading into the European Junior Championships.

Hunt, who will run the 100m at the European Juniors, competes over 200m internationally for the first time and will also form part of a five-woman relay squad, including Cassie-Ann Pemberton (Sharon Morris; Birchfield), who finished fourth in the 100m at the 2018 European U18 Championships.

Holly Mills (Laura Turner-Alleyne; Andover) will double up in the long jump and 100m hurdles, with Lucy-Jane Matthews (Andrew Fisher; Southampton), who holds the UK age-16 best over the 100m hurdles and made the European Under-18 Championship final last year, earning another British vest.

Having already thrown a personal best mark of 60.24m earlier in the year and secured qualification for the European U20 Championships, James Tomlinson (Paul Jensen; Pembrokeshire) will again have one eye on the Welsh U20 discus record of 60.46m, which has been held by Brett Morse since 2008.

In total, seven champions from the England Athletics Under-20 Championships have earned selection, with four athletes making their British debut, including Under-20 long jump trials winner, Stephen MacKenzie (Linda Nicholson; Pitreavie), who was also named in the European Junior team.

Fellow Scots Fraser Angus (Ryan McAllister; Giffnock North) and Praise Olatoke (Colin Sinclair; Kilbarchan) will also make their bows in the 200m and 4x100m relay, whilst Tobi Ogunkanmi (Peter Griffiths; Watford) races over 100m.

Team Leader Trevor Painter said: “The Mannheim Gala is a very important meeting for our age-group athletes. With the Under-20 Championships following shortly afterwards, it gives our athletes the perfect opportunity to get some important international competition under their belts.

“Mannheim is a key meeting for our relay teams in particular, allowing them to fine-tune their preparations, whilst for throwers and jumpers, it provides a good opportunity to back up their recent form in competitions.

“As the European Junior Championships get ever nearer, the meet will offer more vital international exposure to our athletes to test their metal against some of the best for their age in Europe.”
