A clutch of Aviva GB and NI team athletes lined up in Thursday night’s Grand Prix  event in Rome in the third stage of the Samsung Diamond League series.

Top performance came by way of Phillips Idowu (Coach: Aston Moore) who set a world leading mark of 17.59m into a slight headwind to take maximum points ahead of Sweden’s Christian Olsson with 17.29m.

Dai Greene (Coach: Malcolm Arnold) continued his excellent form of the last two season s by taking second in a high quality 400m hurdles race in 48.24 behind South African LJ Van Zyl with 47.91. Team-mate Rhys Williams (Coach: Dan Pfaff) was eighth in 49.94.

Hurdler Perri Shakes Drayton (Coach: Chris Zah) had a solid run over the 400m and although she did not impact on the world class one lappers ahead of her ran a smart race to clock yet another PB over her less favoured event – she finished sixth in 51.47 – just behind reigning world champion American Sanya Richards-Ross.

In the women’s 1500m, Lisa Dobriskey was tenth in a quality race won by Bahraini Maryam Yusuf Jamal, however, Dobriskey’s time of 4:06.35 marks her fastest ever season opener over 1500m.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, Dwain Chambers continued his successful campaign with a further 100m win in the Grande Premio Brasil Caixa de Atletismo in Rio de Janeiro. His 10.05 in 0.0m/s backing up last weekends 10.01.
