Brits Set For Rome Golden Gala
3 June 2015
The Rome Golden Gala is the fourth stop in the IAAF Diamond League series and six British athletes including European champions Tiffany Porter (Coach: Rana Reider) and Eilidh Child (Malcolm Arnold) will take to the Stadio Olimpico track tomorrow evening.
Porter will line up alongside a world-class field in the 100m hurdles as she aims to add to her points tally in the Diamond Race. After a third place finish at the opening Diamond League in Doha last month, the world bronze medallist will take on the fastest woman in the world this year Jasmin Stowers as well as Olympic champion Sally Pearson and world champion Brianna Rollins.
Shara Proctor (Reider) currently sits third in the Diamond Race standings after equalling her national record of 6.95m in the long jump in Doha. She has jumped the furthest of anyone in the field in 2015 and is likely to face her toughest opposition in European bronze medallist Darya Klishina.
In the other Diamond Race events where points are up for grabs, Bianca Williams (Lloyd Cowan) will take on Olympic and world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce over 200m. Laura Muir (Andy Young) returns to the track after a 3000m PB of 8:38.47 and second place at the IAAF World Challenge in Hengelo last month. On this occasion she races over 1500m against 2011 world champion Jenny Simpson who won the last event in Eugene.
There are fascinating line-ups amongst the non-Diamond Race events with 9.96 man Chijindu Ujah (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) and Commonwealth 400m Hurdles silver medallist Eilidh Child involved in the 200m and 400m hurdles respectively.
Ujah clocked 20.50 over 200m at the recent Loughborough International but will face a test against former European 200m champion Christophe Lemaitre of France. Child will face Janieve Russell of Jamaica, the fastest in the field based on current season bests and Olympic silver medallist Lashinda Demus.
Other notable international athletes competing in Rome include Cuban triple jump star Pedro Pablo Pichardo, Renaud Lavillenie, Justin Gatlin, Blanka Vlasic, Sandra Perkovic and many more.
