Brodies Scottish National Championship Launched

Scottish national javelin record holder James Campbell and Susan Deacon, who has dominated the Scottish sprints scene since she exploded on to the international stage in 2000, officially launched the Brodies Scottish National Championship today, Wednesday 8 August.

Campbell will be aiming to build on his Scottish native record of 73.00m set in the Bank of Scotland Celtic Cup in Grangemouth last week.

More significantly, he’ll be aiming to defeat his own Scottish national record which stands at 73.18m when he enters the field at Scotstoun for the final time before the stadium renovations. "It’s about time the record got broken", he said.

For Deacon, the challenge is somewhat different.

The Edinburgh AC athlete will retire on Sunday after attempting to win a sprint double in the 100m and 200m.

"I want to win another Scottish Championship title," she said. "I want to finish my career with a win in Scotland, in front of a home support, family and friends."

The 200m, in which Deacon defends her title after a victory in 2006 (24.20s), will present a particular challenge with the confirmation of Commonwealth gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu who will line up in the 200m event, in addition to the 400m.

Joyce Cullen, Chairman, Brodies LLP said:

"Brodies is delighted to be supporting scottishathletics with the Brodies Scottish National Championships 2007. This is one of a number of sports sponsorship initiatives that we are involved with this year working to promote a healthy nation and sporting talent in Scotland, and to support some of the young stars of the future who we look forward to tracking with interest over the next few years."

The Brodies Scottish National Championships will take place at Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 August.
