Brown Wins Officials Award

5 November 2014

Northern Ireland’s Pam Brown won the ‘Officials Developer of the Year’ award at the Sports Officials UK Awards held at Staverton Park Hotel, Daventry.

Brown is an integral figure in the development of athletics officiating in Northern Ireland. This is a role she has been filling since she was Northern Ireland official’s secretary and has continued in a voluntary capacity ever since

She won the award ahead of Melanie Sweetnam of British Swimming and Peter Tolan of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) to win the illustrious officials accolade and was truly honoured to receive the award.

“I am so pleased to receive this award and I thank UK Athletics for nominating me.”

Brown was recognised by the panel of judges for the hard work and time she has put into this role in athletics, not only officiating at major events including the Commonwealth Games this summer but also acting as a mentor for those seeking to progress in their officiating careers.

For those officials who are aiming to reach level three (National level), she converses with meeting organisers on the mainland so officials in Northern Ireland can gain the requisite experience and reports required to work at a national level.  Only highly competent officials are put forward for this and in recent years several officials from Northern Ireland have qualified at this level which further raises the standard of officiating in the country.

Brown is still an active track judge and management official at national level, and was a member of the Jury of Appeal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and Chief Track judge at the 2014 IPC European Championships in Swansea, as well as supporting a host of local events.
