BUCS TRACK AND FIELD DELEGATION GEARED FOR WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES

Having begun as a Games last Saturday (August 19), track and field action from the World University Games will get underway tomorrow, with a 20-strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland delegation to take to the field of play.

Sprint hurdles action on the female side will see Alicia Barrett (coach: Toni Minichiello) and Jess Turner (Nick Dakin) in action.

100m hurdles specialist Barrett has enjoyed an incredible year, with a strong indoor season backed up with European Junior silver, the British outdoor senior title and a senior call-up for the IAAF World Championships. The Sheffield-based athlete will head to Taipei knowing she is capable of going well once again come the start of her Games on Friday (Aug 25)

Going over the longer sprint hurdles, Turner, a European U23 silver medallist this year, will look to recreate the 56.08 personal best form that saw her gain selection for the IAAF World Championships in the event alongside compatriots Eilidh Doyle (Brian Doyle) and Megan Beesley (Michael Baker).

Elsewhere, and fresh from two consecutive lifetime bests at the world championships in London, Adelle Tracey (Jon Bigg) will contest the 800m and hope to come close to her now revised best of 2:00.26, while

Having being bestowed his first senior British vest for the IAAF World Championships in London, 3000m steeplechase specialist Zak Seddon (Jeff Seddon) is one of many who will head to the Games on high; round one of the discipline hosted takes place this coming Thursday (24), while Jess Judd (Mick Judd), a semi-finalist over 1500m at the same championships, moves up to the 5000m for the Games.

Banstead 400m hurdler Jacob Paul (Marina Armstrong) will be hoping to better his fifth-place finish at last month’s European Athletics U23 Championships in Poland, while his fellow U23 team-mate Charlie Myers will head into the event equally lifted by his debut performance at the event, where he qualified for the final before finishing in 11th place.

Elsewhere, long jumper Daniel Gardiner (John Crotty / Mike Stayman) will be eyeing the Games as a perfect opportunity to break the eight metre mark while using the experience as a stepping stone towards competing at major senior championships such as the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Multi-eventer John Lane (Toni Minichiello) will be looking to make amends after narrowly missing out on a podium finish at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, with the 28-year-old decathlete eyeing a top three finish at the Games following a personal best score of 7965 back in March of this year.
