There were four more meeting records on the second day of the BUSA Indoor Championships at the EIS Sheffield on Sunday 11 March – while former Norwich Union GB Junior Nick Stanisavljevic medalled twice over at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the USA.

The improvements in UK women’s middle distance running, spearheaded by Dame Kelly Holmes with her double gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, gained pace in Sheffield when Charlotte Best (Crawley AC / Loughborough University) lowered the 800m Championship Best to 2:05.32 and Hannah England (Oxford City AC / University of Birmingham) lowered the 1500m Championship Best to 4:19.68.

England, one of the major award winners at this winter’s UK Indoor City Challenge Final, beat the record that belonged to Becky Lyne (Hallamshire Harriers Sheffield), who went on to win the 800m bronze medal at last summer’s European Championships.

Gemma Bennett (Brunel) twice lowered her own 60m hurdles CBP in retaining the title, culminating with 8.25 in the final.

And the American giant at Oxford University, Garrett Johnson put the shot a massive 20.15m, demonstrating the strength and style that has him knocking on the door of the world top 10.

While Richard Hill (UWIC) won his third successive 800m title (in 1:49.28), the 400m provided the highest quality drama.

A week after anchoring Norwich Union GB to their unexpected 4x400m gold medal at the European Indoor Championships, Steven Green (Bath) timed his finish superbly to edge out David Green (UWIC) in the last couple of strides of the 400m final. Their times: 47.23 and 47.26.

Meanwhile, in the USA the 2005 AAA Under 20 high jump champion Nick Stanisavljevic (Woking AC) was the most successful of the UK athletes at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

He won the high jump by clearing a modest 2.11m and finished third in the triple jump with a lifetime best 14.79m at the Division III Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Aine Hoban (Wakefield and District AC), who ran for Norwich Union GB Under 23s at the European Cross Country Championships pre-Christmas, was fifth in the women’s 5000m in 15:52.42 at the Division I Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Scott Overall (Blackheath and Bromley), who ran the 3000m for Norwich Union GB at the European Indoor Championships, was sixth in the 1 mile in 4:01.25, having run his fastest yet indoors time of 4:00.52 in the heats 24 hours earlier.
