London 2012 T53 100m gold medallist Mickey Bushell (coach: Fred Periac) today joined over 100 local Birmingham school children to celebrate 50 days to go until the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix – Birmingham on Saturday 29 June.

The event will host the inaugural IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final and following the sell-out of the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at the end of July, this will be another opportunity to see some of the world’s best Paralympic athletes in action on the track and field.

Over 140 athletes will compete in the global final across 18 events including London 2012 gold medallists Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks), Jonnie Peacock, David Weir (Jenny Archer) and Richard Whitehead (Keith Antoine), and Bushell believes that the event can help continue to boost the profile of the sport.

Bushell said: “I think it’s amazing to have events such as the Sainsbury’s Grand Prix – Birmingham and the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games. It’s showcasing what we do, even after the Games. 

“I think the reception in Birmingham will be amazing for the athletes, and they’ll all feel welcome here at the Alexander Stadium.

“The sport is definitely moving forwards, and the competition is getting better and better especially with the Grand Prix series coming in. I hope we can use this to build on and continue the great work that’s been done so far.”

Today’s seven event challenge, which included 80m, 200m, 60m hurdles, long jump, javelin, 4x100m relay and chest throw was won by St. Lawrence Primary School from Northfield as they saw off nine other schools to secure their place on top of the podium.

Kirsty Dixon, a Young Leader from Birmingham Metropolitan College said: “The day has gone really well and I everyone involved really enjoyed it.

“There’s some great events taking place here this summer at the Alexander Stadium and I’m hoping to come along to a few, both to volunteer and as a spectator. It’s a great venue and it’s easy to get to for the people of Birmingham.

Having Mickey here with his medal has given the kids the opportunity to see someone so famous and inspirational which is unbelievable. All the staff, volunteers and especially the kids have really enjoyed it.

Morgan Smith, who was a part of the winning school added: “I’ve really enjoyed today. My favourite part of the day was the 200m because I came first. It was absolutely fabulous and inspiring to meet Mickey.
