Chambers Tackles Mont Blanc

24 September 2013

British sprinter Dwain Chambers has won medals at European and World Championships but his latest challenge takes him to unchartered territory, a feat which will carry him further outside of his comfort zone than any race on the track ever has.

The 35 year old will attempt to climb Mont Blanc on Thursday, an ascent of 16,000 foot which is a journey much further than the 100m he is used to. The expedition will take seven days and will require him to sleep in a hut at an altitude of 3,500m before tackling the final climb with a head torch at two o’clock in the morning.

After training in the shadow of Mont Blanc at Chamonix in the build-up to London 2012 Chambers will be returning to familiar territory to raise money for Teens Unite, a cancer charity that helps young cancer sufferers and something that the 2010 World Indoor champion is extremely passionate about.

Founded in 2007, Teens Unite aims to support teenage cancer patients following their release from hospital and is the only charity in the country that provides help for teens at this time.

Chambers explains his reasons for undertaking the challenge: “In life we all have our own mountains to climb and conquer. Working with Teens Unite has been a humbling experience and has helped me to put my own life into perspective.

"These young people have the most incredible and inspirational stories of overcoming the biggest obstacles imaginable. It is a privilege to help them in any way on their journey."
