CLARK TOP BRITISH FINISHER AT IAU 100KM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Anthony Clark (Bournemouth AC) was the highest-placed British male finisher at the IAU 100km World Championships in Sveti Martin, Croatia on Saturday 8 September while Sam Amend was the leading female Briton in 15th.

Clark completed the 100km in 6:43:22, a 17-minute improvement on his time recorded when finishing second in this year’s British Championship 100km in March. The World Masters Association Championship was run concurrently with the International Association of Ultrarunners event, and he won the gold medal on the men’s over 40 category.

Rob Turner (Edinburgh AC), the current British 100km champion, was the second British finisher in 7:18:08, crossing the line in 30th position. Hideaki Yamouchi JPN won the men’s championship in 6:28:05 over four minutes clear of his compatriot Takihro Gyoba.

Unfortunately, Lee Grantham (East Cheshire), had to drop-out shortly before the half way mark in the race.

Sam Amend (Belgrave), current British 100km champion, led the GB women home just missing the eight-hour barrier in 8:01:11 for 15th.

After a strong showing at the Comrades marathon earlier this summer, Carla Molinari (Clapham Chasers) finished in 30th place with 8.23.41 with Leamington AC’s Sue Harrison, battling the strong heat and humidity for 51st. This brought the team home in ninth position overall.

Local Favourite, Nikolona Sustic from the home nation was a popular winner of the Woman’s Championship in a world leading 7:20;34. She was run very close by Germany’s Nele Alder-Barens, who finished in 7:22:41.
