Club:connect Hits Glasgow

23/01/2015

The Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match takes place tomorrow but many Scottish eyes will be on the 156 teams taking part in the Club:Connect relays, which incorporate the Scottish Junior Championships.

Over 600 athletes will take part in 4x200m races for under 13, under 15 and under 17 boys and girls at the Emirates Arena, with the heats beginning at 10am and finals taking places as part of the elite international programme later in the day.

The campaign, launched last year, will give many young Scottish athletes the chance to run on the same track as international stars such as World Indoor 60m champion Richard Kilty, who is part of a strong GB and NI team.

British Athletics’ Major Event Director Cherry Alexander said: The Club:Connect initiative is a great way of rewarding the important work of clubs and we will have over 600 athletes participating in 156 teams in the morning of the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match. By working closely with Scottish Athletics we’re confident that the relays will be a resounding success and an inspirational occasion for the young athletes.”

Scottish Athletics Chief Executive Nigel Holl believes the relays offer a unique opportunity for the young athletes. He said: “We’re excited about the weekend ahead and what is in store at the Emirates Arena.

“The Junior and Club:Connect Relays have a big entry with, I believe, 156 teams entered for Saturday. It is certainly going to be hectic, with the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match – featuring a Scotland team – taking place but we feel having the age group relays finals within the programme is a good fit.

“It is a chance for our best club athletes to race in front of a packed crowd at the Emirates Arena and on the same track as Scotland, GB & NI, France and Germany and we hope they enjoy that experience.”

It was announced yesterday that the Sainsbury’s Glasgow International Match would be streamed live by Vinco Sport, meaning that those unable to make it to Glasgow will be able to watch the action live.
