Cockroft In World Record Double Delight

25 May 2017

Hannah Cockroft (coach: Jenni Banks) was in stunning form at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial today as she recorded world records in both the T34 100m and 400m.

Cockroft began the day with the first ever sub 58 second clocking by a female T34 athlete over 400m, recording 57.86. After previously setting the events world record in the Paralympic Games final last September, with 50 days to go until this summer’s World Para Athletics Championships, this was a mark of intent by the seven-time world champion.

Not content with one world record on the day, the Yorkshire-born athlete surged to a time of 17.28 (+1.1) in the 100m, taking 0.03 seconds off her previous record mark. She also managed time for a 1:59.65 in the 800m, her third quickest ever time over the distance, to complete a successful day in Arbon.

She was joined by training partner Carly Tait (Banks) who was agonizingly close to her personal best in the T34 400m, recording a time of 1:06.87.

Another athlete is sensational form is Sammi Kinghorn (Ian Mirfin) who again set European records in the T53 100m and 400m.

The Scot started the day by recording 53.72 in the 400m, a two second improvement from last week. In fact, it went under the previous world record but America’s Chelsea McClammer just pipped her to the line in the race with a time of 53.72. With one record lowered, confidence was high for the 21 year-old. In the 100m, she impressed with a time of 16.21 (+1.1) to take the win, and also raced in the 800m, placing fourth in 1:56.09.

Ben Rowlings (Job King) and Isaac Towers (Peter Wyman) enjoyed quite a day, posting significant personal bests over the T34 400m and 800m. Towers got the upper hand in the 400m, clocking 52.42 for third position with Rowlings fourth in 52.95. However, the tables turned in the 800m, with Rowlings crossing the line third in 1:39.12, a five second PB and European record, with Towers narrowly behind in 1:39.18. The latter also revised his 100m personal best, crossing the line in 16.44 (+0.6).

The Paralympic medallists from Rio in the T33 100m, lined-up once again in the Swiss town, and it was a similar outcome position-wise but there were two big career bests for the Briton’s Toby Gold and Andrew Small. Gold posted a best of 17.05 (+0.6) for second behind Paralympic champion Ahmad Almutairi. Small on the other hand knocked 0.40 seconds off his previous best to record 17.56 which saw him take third place.

Gold had earlier set a European record in the T33 200m of 30.27, whilst Dan Bramall (Peter Wyman) did the same in the T33 400m, with 1:01.12.

Elsewhere, Richard Chiassaro (Banks) pushed a personal best in the T54 800m, clocking 1:32.58 after powering out on his own early on. Added to this was a second place finish in the overall 400m standings, with a season’s best of 46.56. There was also joy for Nathan Maguire (Ste Hoskins) who was narrowly outside his lifetime bests in the 400m and 800m, but showed signs of what is to come. The Stockport athlete’s times were confirmed as 48.21 and 1:36.99.

After an impressive performance at the London Marathon last month, and a place on the podium in her first para triathlon, Jade Jones (Ian Thompson / Tanni Grey-Thompson) was back in action on the track. Her best result came in the 1500m where she set a lifetime best of 3:22.69 for fifth place.
