Dina Asher-Smith (coach: John Blackie; club: Blackheath & Bromley) joined the list of British Diamond League trophy winners as she produced a scintillating display to take the 100m victory ahead of all-time legend, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (JAM) at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium.

Asher-Smith fired out of the blocks, and looked the dominant force in the race, moving away from the Jamaican in the closing stages to clock a season’s best of 10.88 (-0.3) – just 0.03 seconds off her own British record – to claim a major victory on the global stage.

With the IAAF World Championships just a few weeks away, this will be a huge confidence boost for the Briton who beat the Jamaican for the first time in her career over 100m after the latter was ahead of her in Lausanne and London already this year.

However, Asher-Smith added a third Diamond League victory of the season following wins in Doha and Stockholm, but it was her first over the 100m.

In the women’s long jump, Katarina Johnson-Thompson (Bertrand Valcin; Liverpool Harriers) continued her great form in the discipline, leaping out to 6.73 metres in round one which eventually saw her place third overall.

She backed it up with a 6.70m leap and three others over 6.60m to consolidate another impressive performance. She had held second place until the final round when USA’s Brittney Reese moved up into second after a mark of 6.85m.

Johnson-Thompson said afterwards: “I have mixed feelings about my competition. I am sure that I can do better than 6.73m, but it was ok for now. I came here as one of the weakest jumpers and I finish in third position so I can´t complain. This is definitely good for my confidence. I feel like I am ready for the heptathlon. Everything is falling into places.”

As the German, Malaika Mihambo, continued her sublime season, winning with a best of 7.03m, there was also a solid effort from Britain’s Lorraine Ugen (Shawn Jackson; Thames Valley) who jumped a SB of 6.70m in round four which saw her finish fifth overall.

Out in the field, after a long competition, Holly Bradshaw (Scott Simpson; Blackburn) was joint-fifth in the women’s pole vault, clearing 4.70 metres on her second attempt, but bowed out at 4.77m after three fouls. She finished alongside Venezuela’s Robeilys Peinaldo in the standings, the latter’s 4.70m clearance coupling as an equal national record.

After positioning herself well throughout the contest on the shoulder of eventual race-winner, Ajee Wilson, Lynsey Sharp (David Harmer; Edinburgh) ultimately crossed the line in sixth place, the time stopping at 2:01.47.

There was a sixth-place finish for Andrew Pozzi (Santiago Antunez; Stratford-upon-Avon) in the men’s 110m hurdles. Going in lane two, the Briton had a clear run over the hurdles to stop the clock at 13.50 (no wind reading) while the race was won by Spain’s Orlando Ortega in 13.22.

In the non-Diamond League 400m race, European champion Matt Hudson-Smith (Lance Brauman; Birchfield Harriers) clocked 45.63 for second behind Trinidad & Tobago’s Machel Cedenio.

Julie Rogers (Allen Adamson; Bedford & County) was sixth in the women’s 100m blades race for athletes with a prosthetic blade, clocking 18.14 (+0.1). Meanwhile, T51 wheelchair racer Bulbul Hussain (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) was fourth in 22.68 (+0.8) in the 100m in a race won by the Finn, Toni Piispanen in 20.74.
