ENNIS, FARAH AND WEIR SHORTLISTED FOR BBCSPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and David Weir have been shortlisted for the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, which takes place on Sunday 16 December at the Excel Arena in London.  

Chosen by an expert panel, three of this summer’s athletics heroes are now in the running after what has been an exhilarating 12 months of sport in the UK.

Ennis, Britain’s poster girl for the Olympic Games, broke her lifetime best in the heptathlon to secure the gold medal, while Mo Farah created history by becoming the Britain’s first Olympic Champion over 5,000m and 10,000m. David Weir, Britain’s most decorated male Paralympian continued to go from strength to strength winning four gold medals in London in the 800m, 1500m, half marathon and marathon, which was preceded by a record-equalling sixth Virgin London Marathon title in April.

Joining Ennis, Farah and Weir on the 12-strong shortlist are Ellie Simmonds, Sarah Storey, Rory McIIroy, Katherine Granger, Ben Ainslie, Nicola Adams, Andy Murray, Ben Ainslie, Sir Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins.

Presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC One HD and BBC Radio 5 live from 19:30 GMT on Sunday 16 December.
