22 May 2009

UKA have announced a team of five athletes for next month’s European Cup 10,000m in Ribeira Brava, Madeira. The event has been identified as a key opportunity for British athletes to compete against international opposition in quality men’s and women’s races.

It is one of a series of expanded opportunities for British endurance runners to race 10,000m on the track this year, opportunities that have already included races at Birmingham University and the British University & College Sport Championships (BUCS) in Bedford in recent weeks.

Additionally, the 10,000m races will return to the main schedule at the Aviva UK Championships & World Trials which take place in Birmingham on 11-13 July.

Among the team selected for Madeira is English National Cross Country champion Hatti Dean (Hallamshire Harriers). The 27 year old has become a GB & NI regular on cross country and in the 3000m steeplechase on the track. This event will mark her debut over the 25 lap distance on the track.

Dean is joined in the team by Gemma Miles (Kendal), who demonstrated good form on the roads when placing 8th in the BUPA Great Ireland Run last month in 33:55.  Completing the women’s team is Claire Hallissey (Bristol & West) who was 2nd over 10,000m at the BUCS Championships in 34:07.19.

On the men’s side, Phil Wicks (Belgrave Harriers) and Phil Nicholls (Tipton) will don GB & NI vests following some fine recent outings on the roads. Wicks set a new PB of 28:54 in winning the Bristol 10k earlier this month, Nicholls was 8th in last weekend’s BUPA Great Manchester Run in 29:21.
