European Athletics Congress

16 April 2011

In the morning session of the 22nd European Athletics Congress, held in London, representatives from 50 member federations gathered to elect new council members.

In the first vote, president Hansjorg Wirz was re-elected into office to lead, direct and represent European Athletics for the period 2011-2015. In his acceptance speech Wirz noted that the votes were a confirmation and vote of confidence of the successful outcomes from his previous term.

The congress, hosted by European Athletics and UKA, began on Friday 15 with the official opening dinner at which delegates enjoyed a boat trip on the river Thames followed by a viewing of the Crown Jewels and a dinner in the Tower of London.

Following the Saturday congress members will have an opportunity to experience the build up to the London 2012 Olympic Games tour of the Olympic park.

Alfred Stokes and Roger Simons, long serving supporters to athletics in the UK, were recognised by European Athletics and awarded with an accolade during congress. The awards, for outstanding achievements and assistance rendered over a long period of time, were given with particular importance to work done by both in relation to the development of Clubs and Competitions.
