FINAL BRITISH ATHLETES CONFIRMED IN GB & NI TEAM FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

(*This has been updated on Friday 1 July at 17:00 to confirm Ellie Baker’s place in the team)

Following the publication of the Road to Oregon 2022 qualification positions, UK Athletics can confirm that a further 15 athletes will join a large Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for the World Athletics Championships Oregon 2022, taking the team total up to 78 athletes overall.

As outlined in the policy, the objectives were to select a team that maximised medal success, individual top 8 placings, and the number of athletes progressing through rounds. Furthermore, the policy outlined that for those athletes who had not achieved a qualification standard, the panel could only consider those who were ranked in the top 32 (top 27 for 10,000m) on the Road to Oregon list. The panel considered several performance factors, including current form, to select athletes who indicated their potential to meet these objectives.

As per the policy, athletes with a Road to Oregon ranking position outside the top 32 on the World Athletics qualification list were not selected.

Four high jumpers join the team in the men’s and women’s events. Olympians, Emily Borthwick (Robbie Grabarz, Wigan and District) and Morgan Lake (Robbie Grabarz, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) will both compete in the women’s event alongside debutant, Laura Zialor (Jade Surman, Marshall Milton Keynes). UK champion, Joel Clarke-Khan (Robbie Grabarz, Worcester) earns his second senior vest in the men’s competition.

Tokyo finalist Jazmin Sawyers (Lance Brauman, City of Stoke) joins Lorraine Ugen in the women’s long jump, while Naomi Metzger (Aston Moore, Trafford) reaches her first world championships squad in the women’s triple jump.

Fresh from throwing a Scottish discus record of 65.00m in Manchester at the weekend, Nicholas Percy (Zane Duquemin, Shaftesbury Barnet) has been selected for his second World Athletics Championships, and the throws are further represented by Scott Lincoln (Paul Wilson, City of York) and Amelia Stricker (Zane Duquemin, Thames Valley) in the shot put events, and Jade Lally (Zane Duquemin, Shaftesbury Barnet) in the women’s discus.

World Indoor finalist David King (Tim O’Neil, City of Plymouth) joins the 110m hurdles line-up, while Chris McAlister (Marina Armstrong, Thames Valley) goes in the men’s 400m hurdles and Alex Haydock-Wilson (Benke Blomkvist, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) lines up in the 400m. Elsewhere, Molly Caudery (Scott Simpson, Thames Valley) earns a spot in her first worlds team after a successful season which has seen her clear a PB of 4.60m in May, and Olympian Ben Williams (Aston Moore, City of Stoke) is now included in the men’s triple jump field.

Following the publication of the Road to Oregon ranking list UKA have been contacted by World Athletics to let us know of additional withdrawals from other nations that have not been published which have impacted upon GB & NI athletes’ rankings. As a result, Ben Williams (Aston Moore, City of Stoke) and Ellie Baker (Jon Bigg, Shaftesbury Barnet) are now in the top 32 for the men’s triple jump and women’s 800m respectively and are now formally selected to the GB & NI team.

Following his initial selection on Monday, Callum Wilkinson has decided, in agreement with the Performance team, to withdraw from the 20km Race Walk and focus instead on the Commonwealth Games later in the summer.

Olympic Head Coach, Christian Malcolm, added,

“We are pleased to be adding 15 athletes to the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team for Oregon. We believe those added to the team meet the objectives of the policy, that maximised medal success, individual top 8 placings, and the number of athletes progressing through rounds.

“We are taking a large team of 78 to Oregon with athletes competing across a number of disciplines which is really encouraging to see and is healthy for the sport overall. I look forward to seeing how they all perform in America in a couple of weeks.”
