FINALE OF THE BRITISH ATHLETICS MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHALLENGE SERIES THIS WEEKEND

The final round of the British Athletics Mountain Running Challenge takes place this Sunday at the World Championship (Uphill) Trials at Skiddaw in the Lake District.

The three-race series seeks to reward the country’s best mountain runners, offering strong domestic competition ahead of the international competitions. The two best scores out of the three events count towards the overall standings.

Emma Gould (coach: William Laye) has led the way in the Challenge series as well as in British teams this summer at the major championships. Her maiden European bronze medal back in July was a breakthrough moment on the international stage.

She currently leads the Challenge after a second place in Sedbergh back in June, following on from a third place at the Inter-Counties in Derbyshire back in May.

Bronwen Jenkinson (Andy Walling), currently second place in the series, will be hot on her heels with Victoria Wilkinson, winner at the British Athletics Mountain Running Championships back in June, another one to keep an eye on this weekend at the uphill event.

The ever-present Andy Douglas (Sophie Dunnett) will target a second win of the 2018 series in Skiddaw as he targets his fourth consecutive British Athletics Mountain Running Challenge title.

The current series top three, Nick Swinburn, Chris Arthur (Mark Croasdale) and Max Nicholls (Peter Brenchley) will all be challenging for the top prize up in the Lake District. All three – alongside Douglas – were part of the silver-medal winning team at the European (up and down) championships last month.

There will also be men’s and women’s junior races taking place on Sunday, kicking off at midday, covering 6.8km, 720m climb and 200m descent.

The seniors follow at 13:00, racing over 10.4km, 1050m climb and 230m descent.

The race also doubles as the trial event for World Mountain Running Championships (Uphill) which will take place on September 15th in Andorra.
