GB & NI JUNIORS SET FOR MANNHEIM INTERNATIONAL

A team of 20 athletes has been selected for the Mannheim International which will take place next month (2-3 July) in Germany.

The Mannheim International is one of the highest-level junior competitions outside of the World or European U20 Championships each year. Given the importance in preparing the 4x100m relay teams for the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali later this summer, full relay teams as well as several individual developing pathway athletes – U18s are not eligible for this competition – have been selected to compete with the squad size capped at 20.

The women’s 4x100m relay squad contains three members of the gold-medal winning relay team from last year’s European U20 Championships in Estonia: Alyson Bell (Giffnock North), Success Eduan (Anita Richardson, Sale Harriers Manchester) and Joy Eze (Michael Donnelly, Gateshead). The latter two athletes also won individual medals in Tallinn, Eze a bronze in the 100m and Eduan a bronze in the 200m. They’ll be joined in the relay squad by Brooke Ironside (Zac Kerin, Bournemouth), Millie King (Graham Holmes, Ipswich) and Sophie Walton (Trevor Williams, Horwich).

Jeriel Quainoo (Ryan Freckleton, Blackheath and Bromley), European relay gold medallist last summer, heads the men’s 4x100m team, and he will also compete in the individual 100m. Debutant, Olutimilehin Esan (Crawley), Jason Kalala (Nat Senior, Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets), Medwin Odamtten (Gladys Bird, Woodford Green Essex Ladies), Michael Onilogbo (Carl Graham, Newham & Essex Beagles) and Tyler Panton (Peter Griffiths, Woking) are all included in the men’s team.

Among the other athletes competing are the combined eventers, Eloise Hind (Marcia Marriott, Oxford City), Abigail Pawlett (Ashley Bryant, Trafford) and Ella Rush (David Feeney, Amber Valley & Erewash). They have all achieved the World U20 Championships heptathlon standard so this will be a key competition for them as they seek selection next month.
