British Athletics today announced the athletes selected to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland for the European Marathon Cup, which will be included in the European Athletics Championships in Zurich, Switzerland 12 -17 August.

John Gilbert (self-coached), Andi Jones (self) and Ben Moreau (Ken Green) are the trio set to compete in the Swiss city later this summer.

With qualification time set at 2:17.00, Gilbert sealed his place on the team with a personal best of 2:16.46 at last weekend’s London Marathon. Joining him will be Moreau who was 64th at the recent IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen. Moreau finished 11th and 24th over the marathon distance at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships respectively in 2010. Following his victory at the Greater Manchester Marathon last month in a time of 2:16.55, Jones is the third member of the British team.

The full GB & NI team for the European Athletics Championships will be announced on 15 July, following the Sainsbury’s British Championships.
