GB & NI READY TO GO AT WORLD MOUNTAIN AND TRAIL RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THAILAND

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland team are set to compete in the inaugural World Mountain and Trail Running Championships between the 4-6 November in Chiang-Mai, Thailand.

Action gets underway on Friday 4 November with the mountain running uphill only races.

GB & NI will be represented by a quartet of athletes in the senior men’s race which kicks off proceedings at 3:15am GMT. Jacob Adkin (Robbie Simpson, Keswick), the 2019 European uphill champion, will be joined by Dan Haworth (Matlock), Chris Richards (Duncan Richards, Helm Hill) and Joe Steward (Salford) will take on the 8.5km course with an elevation gain of 1021m.

The women will face the same course, and they will go off at 4am GMT. Scout Adkin (Angela Mudge, Ambleside), Kate Avery (Shildon), Ruth Jones (Duncan Mason, Salford) and Holly Page (Lewis Walker, Dartford) make-up the GB&NI team for this race.

Saturday 5th November will see the trail runners taking centre stage as the long and short trail races get underway.

Starting at 11:30pm GMT [Friday night in UK], the British men and women will set off on the 80km course around the mountains in Chiang Mai. With a 4807m elevation gain, it will be a tough race for the whole field.

Five Britons will contest this race; Meryl Cooper (David Roche, Deeside Runners) and Katie Kaars Sijpesteijn (self-coached, Keswick) in the women’s, and George Foster (Martin Cox, Matlock AC), Harry Jones (Martin Cox, Mynyddwyr De Cymru) and Ryan Smith (self-coached, Rocky Mountain Runners) in the men’s.

The short trail race – taking in a 40km course from 00:30 GMT – will also have plenty of British representation with nine athletes putting on the GB & NI vest.

Elsey Davis (self-coached, Preston), Catriona Graves (Tracey Brindley, Highland Hill Runners), Nichola Jackson (Billy Cartwright, Keswick) and Sharon Taylor (Helm Hill) go in the senior women’s race, while Tom Adams (self-coached, Ilkley), Jon Albon (Isfjorden IL), Billy Cartwright (Matlock), Kristian Jones (Swansea) and Brennan Townshend (Keswick) go in the men’s race.

On the final day of the Championships on Sunday 6 November, the final mountain running events take place with the senior and junior up and down races.

The junior men go from 1:30am GMT, and the junior women from 2:00am. Meanwhile, the senior men and women set off at 2:45am and 4:00am respectively.

The junior men’s team consists of Edward Corden (Michael Doyle, Stockport), Fraser Gilmour (Robert Hawkins, Kilbarchan), Finlay Grant (Dark Peak Fell Runners) and William Longden (Terry Fowler, Buxton), while the women’s is made up of Jess Bailey (Matthew Long, Leven Valley), Emily Gibbins (Sally Malir, Ilkley), Rebecca Flaherty (Karen Glerum, Bingley) and Ellen Weir (Anne Hegvold, Hercules Wimbledon).

The senior men’s team will see Chris Richards return for his second race of the Championships, while Alexander Chepelin (Carnethy), Andrew Douglas (Sophie Dunnett, Inverclyde) and Ross Gollan (Sophie Dunnett, Shettleston) get their first event underway on Thai soil.

Adkin, Avery and Page feature for a second time for the senior women with Naomi Lang (Lewis Walker, Carnethy HRC) – who received a late call-up to the team – joining the trio.
