Gb & Ni Team Selected For European Team Championships

10 June 2014

British Athletics today named a 48-strong team to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at the European Team Championships in Braunschweig, Germany on 21 – 22 June.

UK long jump record holder Greg Rutherford (coach: Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) and former world champion Phillips Idowu (Gary Bourne) are set to compete in central Germany later this month.

A number of new faces will be donning the Nike GB & NI kit for the fifth edition of these team championships as well as number of experienced athletes. Chris Baker (Sharon Heveran), Lucy Bryan (Charles Preston) and Jazmin Sawyers (Alan Lerwill) have all received senior team selection for the first time.

Hannah England (Bud Baldaro), William Sharman (Jerzy Maciukiewicz), Eilidh Child (Malcolm Arnold) and Jenny Meadows (Trevor Painter) lead the way as the more experienced members of the squad.

At the 2013 European Team Championships in Gateshead, GB & NI finished third overall with a total points score of 339.

British Athletics Performance Director Neil Black said: “We head to Germany with the aim of being competitive and to challenge for as many points as possible. In comparison to last year’s team, this is very much a developmental squad due to the confines of a crowded calendar this summer and the Sainsbury’s British Championships just a week later.

“It is also great that our senior 400m and 4x400m athletes have wholeheartedly supported the plan to give up and coming athletes the opportunity to perform on this stage.

“It will greatly benefit the teams for future major championships, and I am really looking forward to seeing how these guys perform. There may be one or two surprises.”
