GB & NI’S WORLD 4X100M BRONZE MEDALLISTS TO BE PRESENTED WITH MEDALS AT SAINSBURY’S INDOOR GRAND PRIX

13 March 2014

The GB & NI women’s 4x100m relay team that won bronze at last August’s IAAF World Championships will be presented with their medals at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday.

The quartet of Dina Asher-Smith (coach: John Blackie), Annabelle Lewis (Rana Reider), Ashleigh Nelson (Michael Afilaka) and Hayley Jones (Donald Moss) crossed the line in fourth place but were promoted to the bronze medal position later that evening following the disqualification of the French team.

As they were unable to be presented with them at the time, the four athletes will be awarded their medals in front of a sell-out crowd of 6,500 fans at Birmingham’s NIA on Saturday.

Rana Reider, British Athletics’ relay coach, believes that the team deserve to be recognised for their performance in the Russian capital.

He said: “The four girls ran incredibly well to win bronze in what was a very competitive event in Moscow and I’m delighted that they’ll now get the chance to be presented with their medals.

“As a team they worked really hard and deserved their medal. It was a shame that they weren’t able to stand on the podium in Moscow but this opportunity will at least give them a chance to have their achievement recognised.”

British Athletics performance director Neil Black has also welcomed the opportunity for the team to be formally presented with their medals.

He said: “The performance of the women’s 4x100m relay team in Moscow was superb and they thoroughly deserved their medals. I’m looking forward to seeing them have their moment on Saturday and it’s appropriate that they will get their medals in front of an enthusiastic and knowledgeable British crowd.”
