Commonwealth Games, World Junior and European Youth Championship medallists headline the achievements of the 102 athletes who have benefitted from SportsAid funding in 2018.

SportsAid is the charity for sports people, raising funds from institutional and commercial sectors, to help the next generation of young British sportsmen and women to succeed. SportsAid supports more than a thousand athletes from over 60 sports every year.

Continuing the relationship with British Athletics – an important part of the Olympic Performance Pathway – 102 athletes were successful after the nomination process.

Gold Coast 4x100m gold medallist Reuben Arthur (Ryan Freckleton; Enfield & Haringey) kicked off the relay that saw Team England surge to victory, while 1500m bronze medallist Melissa Courtney (Rob Denmark; Poole AC) also starred in Australia representing Wales.

World Junior bronze medallists Kristal Awuah (Matthew Thomas; Herne Hill) (100m and 4x100m relay), Alex Knibbs (Nick Dakin, Amber Valley & Erewash) (4x400m relay) and Alastair Chalmers (Dale Garland; Guernsey) (4x400m relay) are also recipients of the SportsAid funding during 2019.

The latter also set the British Under-20 record in the 400m hurdles, clocking 50.11 to break Richard Davenport’s previous best of 50.20, which had stood since 2004, with fellow World Junior finalist Molly Caudery (Stuart Caudery; Cornwall) breaking the Under-20 pole vault record, with a 4.53m best.

Scarlet Dale (Colin Gemson; Lancaster & Morecambe) became an individual junior bronze medallist at the European Mountain Running Championship earlier this year, while Amelia Quirk (Mick Woods; Bracknell AC) powering to a fifth-place finish and team gold at the European Cross Country Championships earlier this month.

World age-15 record holder in the men’s high jump, Dominic Ogbechie (Marius Guei / Carol Jackson; Highgate) and 400m specialist Ethan Brown (Lloyd Cowan; Blackheath & Bromley) excelled at the European Under-18 Championships in Gyor, Hungary, while Shannon Hylton (Ryan Freckleton; Blackheath & Bromley) anchored the women’s 4x100m relay team to victory at the Athletics World Cup.
