Despite unfavourable wet conditions at the Golden Spike Meeting in Ostrava on 27 May Welsh athletes Dai Greene and Rhys Williams impressed in the 400m hurdles and were the highlight of the evening from the Brits.

World Championship finalist Greene clocked 49.05, runner-up behind world champion Kerron Clements (USA) 48.69, with Rhys Williams in fourth with 49.28.

Aviva GB&NI sprinters Tyrone Edgar and Craig Pickering finished fourth (10.37) and sixth (10.43) respectively in the 100m. Having made the 100m final with a heat time of 10.24 seconds Lewis–Francis fell afoul of the ‘one false start and you’re out rule’ for his early departure out of the blocks.

Jamaican colleague Asafa Powell produced a 2010 world leading time over 100m, in the absence of Usain Bolt who contested the 300m, blitzing the opposition with a 9.83 clocking.

2008 Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu finished fourth in the 400m. Leading at the 300m mark the GB athlete tired down the home straight finishing in 51.58 seconds

Over 800m Liverpool athlete Michael Rimmer placed seventh with 1:46.47 while Andy Baddeley came home in ninth (1:47.46). Kenya’s David Rudisha cruised to victory in 2:4.03 a second outside of his world lead set in Doha last week.

Dayron Robles (Cuba) won the 100m hurdles in a season’s best of 13.12 seconds with Brits William Sharman taking third (13.57) and Andy Turner sixth (13.76).

GB javelin record holder Goldie Sayers placed fourth with a throw of 56.05m.
