The British team had two finalists in this evening’s programme at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz.

Tom Gale (Denis Doyle) achieved a new lifetime best in the High Jump final clearing 2.18m to finish in ninth place. 

Seventeen year old, Gale, from Team Bath, reflected on his first major championships: “I am a little disappointed because I had such a good jump at 2.18m I really thought I could get 2.21m. I am very happy with the PB and with ninth in the world but thought I could do better. I get another opportunity next year and I want to come back and improve.”

Then in the last race of the evening Cameron Tindle (Henry Gray) was an impressive seventh in the 200m final in 20.81. It was incredibly tight on the line with just 0.04 between fourth and seventh places.

Afterwards Edinburgh AC’s Tindle said: “I got away well. I felt I ran a good bend but I slightly lost my stride otherwise I think I’d have been on for a quick time there potentially challenging for a medal. But I came here ranked 13th, and have come out ranked seventh with two PBs so I can’t argue with that.”

In the women’s 200m semi-finals, Finette Agyapong (Coral Nourrice) progressed to tomorrow’s final with an excellent run finishing fourth just a couple of hours after running in the 4 x 100m relay. Her 23.64 was enough to take her through as one of the fastest qualifiers.

Newham and Essex Beagles athlete, Agyapong said: “I am so happy to make the final. It has been a long day but it is great to finish on a high.”

Charlotte McLennaghan (David Hourd) ran 23.87 to finish fifth in her semi-final which was not quite enough to progress.

She said, “It has been a hard day with the heat, relay and now semi. I am really happy about what I have done. I was injured mid-season so I wasn’t sure I would even make it here. So to come and run two fast times, sub-24s I am happy.”

Earlier in the evening, the men’s 4 x 100m relay team of Zansom Plummer (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo), Oliver Bromby (Sara MacDonald-Gray), Ryan Gorman (Karen Buck) and Gerald Matthew (Jane Dixon) safely brought the baton home to gain automatic qualification for tomorrow’s final winning their heat in 39.91.

Afterwards, Matthew said: “It was comfortable, a strong performance. It was convincing and I think there’s plenty more to come.”

Plummer added, “This is a new team.  It is the first time we’ve come out so it was to come and put in a good performance.”

Unfortunately it was a DNF for the women’s 4 x 100m relay team.
