Greene Voted European Athlete Of The Month

16 November 2010

European and Commonwealth 400m hurdles champion Dai Greene has been named as European Athlete of the Month for October following a public vote.

The Aviva GB and NI athlete capped a golden season with victory at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi clocking 48.52.

This came on the back of his gold medal performance at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona where he ran a personal best of 48.12.

The 24-year-old then came within 0.06 seconds of Kris Akabusi’s 18-year-old British record in the IAAF Continental Cup in Split with 47.88.

Greene was named Athlete of the Month for October alongside Russian marathon runner Liliya Shobukhova who finished just ahead of British duo Louise Hazel and Jo Jackson in the women’s poll.

The European Athlete of the Month initiative was launched in January 2007 and is designed to recognise outstanding performers at all levels of the sport in Europe.

Selections are based on votes by the public, media and a panel of European Athletics experts – each counting for a third of the final vote.

Jess Ennis has won the award an incredible three times on the women’s side in 2010 but Dai Greene is the first Aviva GB and NI representative to win the men’s award this year.

You can send your congratulations to Dai on the official UKA Facebook Page.
