Hahn And Lyle Lead School Games Line-up

4 September 2015

Athletics takes centre stage at the Sainsbury’s School Games today with over 350 young athletes heading to Manchester to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jonnie Peacock and Dina Asher-Smith who won gold medals at the event in the past.

The event will see a large number of Britain’s best para-athletes competing for their region and some will have their eye on putting down a marker with only a few weeks to go until the IPC World Championships in Doha.

Double IPC European champion in the T35 100m and 200m Maria Lyle (Tabo Huntley) will compete in both these ambulant events today. The Scotland-athlete lines up against many familiar faces in the British team, including Sophie Hahn (Joseph McDonnell) who is competing for the first time since her T38 100m world record of 13.00 at the IPC Grand Prix in July.

Erin McBride (Robert Roberts) and Sophie Kamlish (Robert Ellchuk) will also feature in the 100m, with North West athlete McBride also taking on the 400m. She will be looking to add a School Games gold medal to the silver and bronze she won in 2013. James Arnott (Ryan Freckleton) goes in the men’s ambulant 100m and 200m after impressing at the IPC Grand Prix where he set a personal best of 11.36 in the 100m.

Shelby Watson (Ian Mirfin) burst onto the scene last weekend at the IPC age-group championships in Bedford as she secured a non-ratified, thus unofficial world record in the T33 100m with a PB of 20.89. She will be hoping to continue her rich vein of form as she lines up against double Paralympic champion Hannah Cockroft (Jenni Banks) who is a guest in the women’s 100m wheelchair race. Triple IPC European champion Sammi Kinghorn (Mirfin) will be involved in the women’s wheelchair 800m.

Olivia Breen (Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) features in the ambulant long jump after seeing improvements in the event this year, including a career best of 4.28m in July. Another field event highlight will see IWAS Junior Games shot put champion and discus bronze medallist, Millie Forrest (Robert Helliwell) line up in the ambulant discus. She will be looking to add to the School Games shot put gold medal which she won at last year’s edition of the event.

All the athletics action takes place on Friday 4 September. More information about the event can be found here: http://www.2015schoolgames.com/sports_athletics.php
