Haining Takes UK Half Marathon Title

UK Half Marathon Championships, Great Scottish Run, Glasgow, 07/09/08

Hayley Haining was the standout British performer from Sunday’s Great Scottish Run. She finished 3rd overall in the women’s race in 71:28, 28 seconds adrift of Ethiopian winner Worknesh Tulu. As leading Brit she won the UK Championship title from Birhan Dagne (6th overall) in 73:59 and Alyson Dixon (8th overall) in 74:37.

Already in possession of the UK Athletics selection guideline, having ran well inside 72:20 Haining is now eligible for automatic selection for next month’s World Half Marathon Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, should she choose to target the event.

In the men’s race, Emmanuel Mutai (Kenya) won in a course record of 61:10. The leading Brit in 10th place overall and winner of the UK Championship title was Thomas Abyu in 64:14. The silver went to Robert Russell, who was 12th overall in 65:22 and bronze to Steve Hepples, 14th overall in 65:37. None have secured the UK Athletics qualifying standard of 63:20.

 


McCain Young Athletes League Finals, Manchester 07/09/08

There were screams of delight echoing around Sports City, Manchester as Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow won the Main Final at the McCain Young Athletes Final. They accumulated a mighty 834 points to triumph over Blackheath and Bromley and home club Sale Harriers Manchester, who totalled 758 and 735 respectively.

There were six new meeting best performances recorded at the meeting. Among the U17 age groupings, Andrew Jordon (Blackheath & Bromley) set a new best in the boys hammer with 69.28m, smashing the previous best by nearly two metres, Hannah Docherty (Sale Harriers Manchester) sliced nearly five seconds off the girls 3000m best, winning in 10:18.6 and Katarina Thompson cleared 1.75m in the girls high jump for another meeting record, beating the previous best by 7cm.

In the U15 classes, Sam Maguire (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) set a new meeting record for the boys 80m hurdles, logging 11.1 (-0.7m/s). In the U13 events, Ruth Bourne (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) was another record breaker, clocking 3:52.7 in the girls 1200m, as was Marnie-Wells Nicholls (Liverpool Harriers) who cleared 1.51m for the girls high jump.

In the Auxiliary Final, Enfield & Haringey won with 800 points.
