Hitchon Headlines Halle Team
16 May 2016
British Athletics has today announced the team of 12 heading to the Halle Throws competition in Germany on Saturday 21 May.
British hammer record holder Sophie Hitchon (coach: Tore Gustafsson) finished fourth at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing last August, extending her national record at the same time to 73.86m. The Blackburn athlete began her 2016 season with a throw of 70.65m in Kingston, Jamaica recently, her best ever season opener. She will face Poland’s world record holder Anita Wlodarczyk in a world-class field.
She will be joined by Jade Lally (Andrew Neal) who has enjoyed the perfect start to the 2016 season, moving to second on the UK all-time list in the discus with a throw of 65.10m in February. With three further plus 63m throws in the bag this year, Lally will look to continue her encouraging 2016 campaign in the German city.
Scottish hammer record holder Mark Dry headlines the senior men’s team. His breakthrough throw of 76.93m last May, saw him move to fifth on the UK all-time list and qualify for the British team at the World Championships in the Birds Nest Stadium.
Leading the under 20 men’s team is George Evans (Colin McCulloch) who burst on the scene at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Cali last year. The Scottish athlete was one of three medallists in Colombia, winning bronze in the boys discus throw. It was a coming of age for the 18 year-old who holds a personal best of 57.21m in the discus.
