Honours For Athletics

Once again the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list revealed today has recognised a number of athletics colleagues .

Former world champion athlete Steve Cram – a key part of the BBC commentary team providing the memorable words to our athletes greatest moments – has been appointed a CBE for his recent work as chairman of the English Institute of Sport.

The former world champion, 1984 Olympic silver medalist also broke world records in the 1,500 metres, 2,000 metres and the mile.

Wendy Sly, who won silver in the 3,000m at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, receives an MBE for services to athletics. More recently she sits on the board of England Athletics as a non-executive Director and has attended cross country major championships as part of the GB & NI team management.

Dame Mary Peters, who won a gold medal in the women’s pentathlon at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, also joins the Companion of Honour.
