British duo Matt Hudson-Smith (coach: Lance Brauman) and Charles Da’Vall Grice (Jon Bigg) got the first points of their 2018 Diamond League season on the board with solid performances at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Taking to the track for the first time in Europe, Hudson-Smith collected his first two Diamond League points of the season as he clocked 45.52 in Rome, finishing seventh in the men’s 400m, won by Fred Kerley (USA) in a season’s best 44.33.

Da’Vall Grice went head-to-head with fellow Brit Chris O’Hare (Terrence Mahon) for the second time in a week in the men’s 1500m, after facing off at the Westminster Mile on Bank Holiday weekend, which was won by the latter.

This time, Da’Vall Grice got the better of O’Hare to finish sixth in a season’s best 3:35.72 and secure himself three points in the process, with the latter three places further back in another season’s best 3:36.47 narrowly missing out on the final point.

Timothy Cheruiyot (KEN) followed up his victory in Eugene at the weekend by setting a new world lead to win in 3:31.22, taking just over 0.25 off his own season’s best.

Rosie Clarke (David Harmer) set a new personal best of 9:32.08, shaving 0.02 off her PB and knocking over four seconds off her season’s best as she finished 12^th in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Kenyan Hyvin Kiyeng smashed the meeting record of 9:11.58 to win in 9:04.96, a new world lead.

Kyle Langford (Jon Bigg) could not follow up his fifth place finish in Eugene at the weekend with his first points of the season in the men’s 800m. He finished 11^th in 1:48.92.

Zak Seddon (Jeff Seddon) followed up his qualifying standard for the European Championships in the 3000m steeplechase with a 17^th place finish in Rome in 8:30.19. Kenyan Conseslus Kipruto took the victory in a new world leading mark of 8:08.40.

The programme was brought to a close by para athletes Julie Rogers (Allen Adamson) and Morgan Jones (Christian Malcolm) in the women’s and men’s para 100m respectively.

Rogers opened up her outdoor season with a time of 17.72 as she finished fifth, while Jones clocked 12.66 in the final race of the night.
