IAAF World Championships, Osaka - Day 8 - Morning Session

1 September 2007

A quiet, yet productive morning for the Norwich Union Great Britain and Northern Ireland Team as the women’s 4x100m team progressed to tonight’s final.

Racing from the awkward lane 1, the GB&NI quartet of Laura Turner (Harrow AC), Montell Douglas (Blackheath & Bromley), Emily Freeman (Wakefield Harriers) and Joice Maduaka (Woodford Green with Essex Ladies) produced a barnstorming season’s best of 42.82 to finish third in the second semi final behind USA and Jamaica to secure automatic qualification for Saturday night’s final.

The performance placed them third fastest overall of the eight qualifiers. Afterwards, Maduaka said: “We have an excellent relay programme. We have committed ourselves since we stepped off the track at Gothenburg (where in last year’s European Championships, GB & NI took silver) where we said ‘You know what? We can build on this.’

“We just ran that from lane 1, with very safe check marks. Yeah, the Americans and Jamaicans will maybe do a bit of a ‘switcheroo’. But our checkmarks are going to extend and it will be a good story this evening. It will be.”
