I’ll Be Back, Vows Becky

European 800m silver medallist Becky Lyne is determined her summer is not over and pledged to bounce back – despite withdrawing from the World Championships in Osaka.

She injured her left calf the day after her last race, at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix nine days ago, but is confident the medical assistance she receives from UKA’s lottery-funded World Class Podium Programme will restore her to full fitness for the flurry of Golden League races post-Championships.

She said of her latest setback: “I don’t think it’s too serious. I’ve been trying to wrestle through because I could not afford to miss any more training if I was going to the Worlds. But in doing that, I’ve made it worse.

“If there is no tear, it will only take a few days to settle. I can have a bit of a training camp while the Worlds are on and then get back to racing in September.”

Lyne, who made sure her rival for a place in the Norwich Union GB&NI team, Jennifer Meadows, was first to hear of her withdrawal, added: “I didn’t want to go to the Worlds just to participate. I knew if I could not get to the start line in Manchester on Saturday night, I would rather bite the bullet.

“If Jenny wasn’t waiting in the wings, there would not be such urgency. I wanted to be up-front with her and let her know the situation.

“It is unfortunate. I can’t apologise for trying to get selected ahead of her because I genuinely believed everything was going well in training. I had a buzz about me. But this calf thing seemed like the final straw. I’ve been fighting really hard to get through it but there is no point making it worse. There will be other years.”

UK Athletics announced on Sunday that Jennifer Meadows (Wigan & District Harriers) has been called up into the Norwich Union Great Britain & Northern Ireland team to replace Lyne in the 800m.

UKA Performance Director Dave Collins said:

“Becky missing out on a chance to compete in Osaka is a major dissapointment to her. I would like to praise her on her honesty at coming forward and telling us about her injury and being up front with everyone involved.

"Becky is a committed athlete and the way she has been honest to herself and to the team shows the welcomed maturity that our athletes at the highest level have. We shall continue to offer her all the support she needs to get herself fit and ready to compete."
