Important Changes To The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List

20 December 2012

The UK Anti-Doping Science and Medicine team has provided the following information on the changes to the Prohibited List for 2013.

WADA has published the 2013 Prohibited List which will come into effect from 1 January 2013 and UK Athletics encourages athletes and support personnel to make themselves familiar with these changes ahead of implementation.

Key changes:

  • Formoterol – The permitted inhaled dose of formoterol (a medication found in asthma inhalers) has increased from 36 micrograms to 54 micrograms over 24 hours.

  • Stimulants: methylsynephrine – All athletes and support personnel are again reminded that all substances, in particular many stimulants (often branded as legal highs), are referred to by several different names. UK Anti-Doping has previously highlighted the risks around methylhexaneamine. The 2013 List sees a further example in methylsynephrine added as a different name for the prohibited substance oxilofrine.

  • Anti-Diabetic drugs: Insulin remains prohibited however amendments to the list have been made which mean that other anti-diabetic drugs e.g. exenatide and liraglutide are not prohibited

  • Monitoring Programme: in order to reveal potential patterns of abuse, tapentadol has been added to the Monitoring Program in 2013 under in-competition narcotics.

The 2013 Prohibited List and a summary of modifications can be found on the UK Anti-Doping website and please ensure that you continue to regularly check any medication you wish to use on the Global Drug Reference Online website which can be found at www.globaldro.com.
