Jessica Ennis To Compete At Bank Of Scotland Celtic Cup 2007

 

 

Further to the event launch on Friday June 29th with Scotland’s Lee McConnell and Australian star Craig Mottram, scottishathletics are please to confirm a further signing for the Bank of Scotland Celtic Cup on the Tuesday July 31st at Grangemouth Stadium, Falkirk

Jessica Ennis will compete in both the 200m and long jump in Grangemouth and so will go head to head with Scotland captain Lee McConnell (200m) and Gillian Cooke (long jump), Gillian’s best of 6.33m is sure to be tested by the in-form Ennis who has a PB of 6.40m.

Ennis (City of Sheffield AC) led the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Women’s team to a historic first ever victory in the European Cup Combined Events Super League in Szczecin, Poland yesterday, Sunday 8th July.  Setting two lifetime best’s in the 800m and javelin, she pushed Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton into second place.

 

Ennis is another star to be added to the Bank of Scotland Celtic Cup. The line up now includes:

 

  • Sonia O’Sullivan

 

One of the leading female distance runners for most of the 1990’ and early 2000s, her crowning achievements were a World Championship Gold medal in 1995 and Olympic Silver in Sydney in 2000.  This will be her last appearance on the track in an Irish vest in the 3000m.

 

  • Jason Gardener

 

The “Bath Bullet” will run the 100m in Grangemouth and has tasted European Indoor Gold four times over 60m.

 

  • Lee McConnell

 

A former high-jumper, won Commonwealth Games silver in Manchester (2002) over the flat 400m, and later that year won bronze in the same event at the European Championships.

 

  • Craig Mottram is Australia’s greatest ever 5000m runner.

 

He won World Championship bronze over 5000m in Helsinki in 2005 and Commonwealth Games silver over the same distance in Melbourne, his home town, in 2006.  Last summer he defeated Kenenisa Bekele to win the World Cup 3000m.
