Jeter Targets Glasgow Win

26 January 2010

AMERICAN sprinter Carmelita Jeter is looking forward to her first visit to Glasgow and hopes that she can impress the Scottish crowd with a dazzling performance, when she runs in the USA team at the Aviva International Match on January 30 at the Kelvin Hall.

Last season Jeter recorded the fastest time by a woman over 100m since Griffith Joyners’ World Record, which was set 21-years-ago.  But despite being the fastest women on the earth in 2009 she had to settle  for bronze at the World Championships in Berlin.

Now, the 30-year-old hopes that a good result at the 60m in Glasgow will be the start of a successful World Indoor Championships campaign.

Jeter set her PB of 7.11 secs at the Aviva Grand Prix last February and now the Los Angeles-based athlete can’t wait to make her mark in front of the local crowd in Scotland.

Jeter said: “I’ve not raced in Glasgow before. Last year I posted some really fast times and my indoor season went really well, so hopefully I can impress the Glasgow crowds and post another fast time as I gear up for the World Indoor Championships.”

The US sprinter will line up against another Berlin World Championship finalist Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas.

Former World Indoor champion Chandra Sturrup was part of the Bahamas’ 4x100m silver medal-winning quartet at the last year’s World Championships, and she returns to Glasgow after finishing second at the Kelvin Hall last year.

Meanwhile Bernice Wilson will make her senior debut for the Aviva GB and NI team in the 60m.  The 25-year-old has already set a Personal Best this year.  She shaved two-hundreths of a second off of her previous 60m time when she ran 7.37 seconds in Sheffield earlier this month.
