Kallenerg Eighth On World 50km Debut

5 December 2015

Michael Kallenberg (coach: James Thie) finished in 8th place at the inaugural IAU World 50km Championships in Doha, Qatar yesterday.

Kallenberg dealt with the conditions well and showed his strength over the distance with a strong second half to his race. At the 28km point, the Welshman picked up the pace which saw him move from 15th to 8th position. The Cardiff based-athlete nearly caught Zimbabwe’s Mike Fokorani in the closing stages but he settled for his first top ten finish on the world stage, recording a time of 3:02.01.

Michael Crawley (Max Coleby) unfortunately had to withdraw from the race after 28km.

America’s Tony Migliozzi and Camille Herron claimed the men’s and women’s individual titles respectively on the course around the Aspire zone complex.

British Athletics’ Team Leader Walter Hill said:” It is a great experience for Michael Kallenberg to challenge for a top 10 finish in this first world championship. He hung in well and although very tired at the end, he equipped himself very well.

“Let’s hope at next year’s event we can see a top three finish.”
