KERR BREAKS TWO UK RECORDS - WEEKEND UPDATE 25-27 FEBRUARY

Olympic medallist Josh Kerr (Danny Mackey, Edinburgh) produced one of the best displays of middle-distance running in British history as he smashed the UK indoor records in the 1500m and mile in the same race.

Kerr won the mile in 3:48.87 to lower Peter Elliot’s long-standing British record, and also the European indoor record. Additionally, it was the third fastest ever in the world over the distance indoors.

Not only a record display over the mile, his 1500m split was also a British indoor record – also previously held by Peter Elliot – in 3:32.85, which was the eighth quickest time in history.

UK Athletics Winter Long Throws Championships, Loughborough, 27 February 2022

Katie Head (Paul Head, Newham and Essex Beagles) equalled her PB of 69.72m to win the women’s hammer in Loughborough. She set the mark a couple of weeks earlier which moved her to second on the UK all-time list in the event behind Sophie Hitchon.

Jess Mayho (John Pearson, Birchfield) was second in the competition with a solid best of 68.11m, while Charlotte Payne (Paul Dickenson, Reading) was third with a personal best of 66.74m.

In the women’s javelin there was a lifetime best for Bekah Walton (David Turner, Blackheath and Bromley) who threw a mark of 55.68m which was an improvement from 54.27m which she threw last summer in Tallinn. Elsewhere, 2016 Paralympic champion Hollie Arnold (David Turner, Blackheath and Bromley) opened her season with a mark of 40.26m.

Paralympic shot put champion Aled Davies (Ryan Spencer Jones, Cardiff) was back in the discus circle after a couple of years absence, and won the para competition with a best of 52.54m.

Other senior winners on the day included Zane Duquemin (John Hillier, Shaftesbury Barnet) who triumphed in the men’s discus with a SB of 61.39m, and Kirsty Law (Zane Duquemin, Sale Harriers Manchester) who won the women’s discus competition with a best throw in the series of 54.69m.

Joe Harris (Manx) won the senior men’s javelin with a best of 75.17m, while Osian Jones (Liverpool) claimed victory in the men’s hammer after throwing 70.74m. James Wordsworth (Neil Ellerby, North Shields Poly) won the U20 men’s discus, throwing the 1.75kg weight, with a measure of 50.38m.

ECCA Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill, London, 26 February

Mahamed Mahamed (Idris Hamud, Southampton) and Jess Gibbon (Reading) were the senior winners at the English Championships at the iconic Parliament Hill.

Mahamed was a clear winner ahead of Emile Cairess (Leeds City), while nearly a minute further back was Olympic Triathlon medallist Alex Yee (Kent) who took the bronze medal.

In the senior women’s contest, Gibbon continued her strong winter form to win the national title ahead of Eleanor Bolton (Ribble Valley Harriers) with Bronwen Owen (Andrew Henderson, Leeds City) capturing the bronze medal.

Will Barnicoat (Aldershot Farnham and District) and Alexandra Millard (Peter Mullervy, Invicta East Kent) seal the U20 titles, while Sam Mills (Exeter) and Jess Bailey (Matthew Long, Leven Valley) took home the U17 gold medals.

Robert Price (Andrew Carter, Vale Royal) and Isabella Waugh (Richard Harris, Rotherham) claimed the U15 titles, with Jake Meyburgh (Shireen Higgins, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) and Katie Webb (Barry Hearn, Marshall Milton Keynes) taking gold in the U13 contests.

Scottish National Cross Country Championships, Falkirk, 26 February

Mhairi Maclennan (Ross Cairns, Inverness) took her third gold in the senior women’s race as Central AC’s Jamie Crowe (Derek Easton) successfully defended the senior men’s title he won for the first time in 2020.

Maclennan had a big advantage over Scout Adkin (Moorfoot) who took the silver, while Morag Miller was next across the line for the bronze.

For Crowe, he topped the podium ahead of Ross Gollan (Sophie Dunnett, Shettleston) and Andrew Douglas (Sophie Dunnett, Inverclyde).

European U20 Women’s champion Megan Keith (Ross Cairns, Inverness) backed up her status as overwhelming favourite to repeat her 2020 win as Hungarian-born Kristof Hornyuk took the U20 men’s race.

The U17 titles went to Louisa Brown (Garscube) and Corey Campbell (Alister Russell, Team East Lothian), while Freya Campbell (Duncan Robertson, Giffnock North) and Craig Shennan (Angela Carson, Giffnock North) won the U15 gold medals. Lois MacRae (Inverness) and Angus Wilkinson (East Kilbride) ran out winners in the U13 races.

Welsh Cross Country Championships, Pembrey, 26 February

James Hunt (Steve Mitchell, Cardiff) and Lauren Cooper (Nicola Haines-Jones, Parc Bryn Bach) became Welsh champions over the weekend in the senior races.

Hunt pipped Dan Nash (Cardiff) by six second in the senior men’s race to take the gold medal, while Adam Bowden was next across the line to earn the bronze medal.

Cooper finished with a 30 second margin ahead of Caryl Edward (Swansea) who took the silver medal while Chloe Dooley (Pontypridd) completed the podium.

Jones Daffyd and Ellen Kearney (Sarah Kearney, Wirral) were U20 champions, while Ceri Griffiths (Darryn McAtee, Newport) and Artie Savage-Swaine (Neil Miller, Westbury) were U17 winners.

Carmarthen’s Iwan Thomas (Neil Thomas) and Menai’s Beca Haf Bown took home the U15 titles, while William Coles and Swansea’s Libby Hale (John Griffiths) completed the roll of honour by winning the U13 races.

Northern Ireland & Ulster Senior Championships, Derry, 26 February

Catherine Whoriskey  (City of Derry Spartans) earned a narrow victory over Jessica Craig (Vince Wilson) of North Down AC as she won the senior women’s race by two seconds. Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle & District AC) followed to claim the bronze medal.

In the senior men’s race, Conan McCaughey (Mark Kirk, North Belfast Harriers) ran out the comfortable winner ahead of Eskander Turki (Annadale Striders) and Neil McCartan (Mark Kirk, East Down AC) who claimed the other podium positions.

SEC Indoor Championships, College Station Texas, USA, 25-26 Feb 22

Amber Anning set a UK lead in the women’s 400m as she clocked 51.87 for fourth place in the final in Texas. With her PB standing at 51.78, the Brighton and Hove athlete is close to her best ever form.

Results
