LANE INFRINGEMENT UPDATES PUBLISHED BY WORLD ATHLETICS

Yesterday (01 November) marked the commencement of a number of competition and technical rule changes approved by the World Athletics Council.

One of the key changes which came into effect was the easing of the rules regarding lane infringements. These came into focus at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham in March 2018, when there were 21 disqualifications relating to lane violations, including four in two races.

Agreed earlier on this year in March and July 2021, those changes mean some one-off lane infringements are now permitted but shall result in disqualification if they are repeated by the same athlete or within the same relay team at any time during the rounds of the same event.
