Earlier today it was announced that three-time Olympian and Glasgow girl Lee McConnell (coach: Rodger Harkins) will run over 200m at the British Athletics International Match on Saturday 26 January.

The 400m specialist is one of Scotland’s most decorated athletes of recent times and took the time to answer some of her fans questions using #AskMcConnell on the @UKA_athletics Twitter feed: 

Q: Lee, what was the main reason for switching from the High Jump to the track?

A: I wanted to be an Olympic athlete and I didn’t think I could fulfil it in high jump 

 

Q: What would you say are the three main things that make you up as an athlete? 

A: Determination, perseverance and belief

 

Q: Have you ever considered stepping up to the 800m?

A: No! 400m is definitely far enough. I’m not built for 800 – physically or mentally! 

 

Q: How’s the @EmiratesArena looking?

A: It’s looking big and full of kids!

 

Q: Do you think disability sports have more of a following since the Paralympics & cld they be better advertised in the media?

A: Yes definitely. It was fantastic to see the coverage has improved so much. Rightly so! 

 

Q: Can I please have a high-five after you race in the 200m at the British Athletics International Match in Jan? 

A: Of course! 🙂 

 

Q: When u were training as a teenager did you aspire for your career to be so successful? Did you have other aims?

A: No it was a dream and its turned into reality 🙂

 

Q: If you could run any race again, what would it be and why? 

A: A tough one…. race I would re-run is Athens 2004 because I was in peak condition but mis-judged pace & wasted the opp

 

Q: What is your main goal for this year?

A: To qualify for the world champs in Moscow

 

Q: What the best method to build stamina fast?

A: ….running! Lol

 

Q: Do you prefer running in individual events or the relays and why?

A: I love both. Just love competing general

 

Q: Does she remember training on the track in Tenerife in April this year? I got to speak to her 🙂

A: Yeah I remember. Loved Tenerife. Weathers better than Glasgow!
