Legendary Sprinter Coaches Kids Ahead Of Sainsbury's Indoor Grand Prix

Kim Collins, the world’s number one ranked 60m runner, gave a master class to local children today ahead of the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix, which takes place at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham on Saturday 21 February.

Collins, who ran a 60m personal best of 6.47 at the age of 38 on Tuesday evening, led a session at the nearby Alexander Stadium with 15 local children and answered their questions ranging from his experiences at major championships to nutrition.

The 2003 world 100m champion, who turns 39 in April, has been in incredible form this year, twice running 6.48 seconds before lowering his personal best further to 6.47 in Poland on Tuesday to top the world lists. That is time just one hundredth of a second slower than the track record at the Barclaycard Arena of 6.46 held by Justin Gatlin.

Having never recorded a victory in eight visits to this venue, including a second place finish at the 2003 World Indoor Championships, Collins is looking forward to competing at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday.

He said: “I will be targeting the stadium record, that’s a good target for me. I’m looking forward to the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix, this will be the time that everyone will remember.”

Collins will face a strong 60m field on Saturday which will include the recently crowned British champion Chijindu Ujah (coach: Jonas Tawiah-Dodoo) and international stars such as USA’s Ryan Bailey, who is second in the world rankings having run a time of 6.50 in Seattle last weekend. James Dasaolu (Steve Fudge) has unfortunately withdrawn from the men’s 60m due to illness and Richard Kilty (Linford Christie) has also withdrawn with a minor injury.

The Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix will be shown live on BBC One from 1.00pm to 4.30pm. Sainsbury’s is proud to be a long-term supporter of British Athletics and a champion of inclusive sport for all, from grassroots to elite level.
