London 2012 Paralympic Games Selection Policy

27 April 2011

Following one of the most successful IPC World Championship campaigns for the Aviva Great Britain and Northern Ireland team in January 2011, UKA has today released the London 2012 Paralympic Games selection policy.

The selection policy – which outlines the process by which UKA will arrive at its nominations for ParalympicsGB for the London 2012 Paralympic Games – stipulates the IPC’s minimum qualification standards for consideration.

Qualification performances must be achieved within the period 01 March 2011 and 08 July 2012 and already a number of standards have been achieved by Aviva GB & NI athletes who contributed to a record medal haul of 45 at the IWAS World Junior Championships in Dubai earlier this month.

Only athletes with at least an IPC Athletics ‘B’ standard within the qualification period will be considered for nomination.

The UKA selection panel will meet on 09 July 2012 to select a team to nominate to ParalympicsGB for ratification. The final decision in selection for the Paralympic Games lies with ParalympicsGB.

“There is no doubt that our athletes have benefited from an increase in high quality domestic competition opportunities over the past 12 months and overall, performances have improved which gives us great confidence,” said UKA Head Coach (Paralympic) Peter Eriksson.

“We’ve demonstrated our ability to deliver on the global stage with exceptional results in both junior and senior World Championships this year and already athletes are achieving qualification standards for 2012. This puts us in an enviable position to nominate not just those who are hitting those standards, but those who are exceeding performance targets and are competing at the highest level in their events.”
