Matti Mortimore Improves UK U15 Javelin Best

Memories of Jan Zelezny’s world record javelin throw of 95.66 metres at Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium in 1993 came flooding back at the England Athletics Under 17 and Under 15 Championships at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield, on 11 and 12 August.

Matti Mortimore was barely four and a half months old when the Czech thrilled the packed crowd at a televised meeting by throwing almost the full length of the grassed area of the in-field. But the talented young Ipswich Harrier joined Don Valley’s elite list of record-breakers on Saturday by extending his own UK Under 15 Boys’ javelin best to 62.32m. It erased his own previous record of 58.35m at the UK Challenge JumpsFest at Birmingham last month.

There were also championship best performances by Curtis Griffith-Parker (Cambridge Harriers) in the Under 17 Men’s shot and Sophie Hitchon (Pendle AC) in the Under 17 Women’s hammer.
