Abbi Carter (Dave Smith) recorded a new UK Best in the under 17 women’s hammer at the second day from McCain JumpsFest and ThrowsFest.

Carter came into the competition ranked second on the McCain Power of Ten rankings but managed to hurl the hammer out to 55.44m with her penultimate throw.

She said: “I’m over the moon. It’s taken a long time and I really have been trying to get it. It’s a big relief.”

“It was a good competition, the atmosphere was nice and it was a relaxed environment and that’s when the big throws come,” she added.

“I put my success down to training really hard, the guys I train with, my coach and the passion for it,” said the new leader on the Power of Ten All Time list.

There were two high quality high jump competitions with Stephanie Pywell (Fayyaz Ahmed) winning the women’s match thanks to a leap of 1.86m.

She said: “I’m pleased with it as a whole. I was miles over 1.89m but just kept flicking it with my feet on the way down so in a way I am a bit gutted, but I’m doing the Aviva London Grand Prix next week so I hope to jump a PB there.”

The high jumper is also seeing her talents recognised off the track and has made it to the final of the Miss England competition.

“I’ve been fast-tracked to the final 20 after winning Miss Sportswoman and to win Miss England would be amazing,” she said.

Samson Oni (Trevor Llewelyn) beat a strong field in the men’s high jump, which included three of the top four on this year’s Power of Ten, equalling his outdoor season’s best with 2.27m.

He said: “I haven’t been competing very well for the last few weeks and that’s down to me catching a virus in the middle of the season and I haven’t been able to come back off that but now I think I’m back up towards my best and the goal is to get a PB before the end of the season.”

The triple jump saw international competition push up the standards as Jamaican-born former IAAF World Champion Trecia Smith jumped a massive 14.15m in the women’s competition which also saw Nadia Williams (Keith Flemming) take second with a new lifetime best of 13.68m.

Swiss athlete Alexander Hochueli flew to London to compete and was rewarded with a new personal best of 16.37m. Ben Williams (John Crotty), fresh from the IAAF World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada, showed good consistency with a solid jump of 15.91m to take second.

A throw of 61.07m gave Brett Morse (Nigel Bevan) victory in the men’s discus as he extended his lead in the McCain UK Challenge, as did Alex Smith (Shane Peacock) in the men’s hammer with 70.85m.
