Several British athletes were in action at the FBK Games in Hengelo, Netherlands, at the World Athletics Continental Gold meeting.

Eilish McColgan (Liz Nuttall, Dundee Hawkhill) ran a superb solo time of 30:19.02 which moved her to second on the UK all-time list for 10,000m. The time was also the fifth quickest ever by a European and was only 18 seconds outside Paula Radcliffe’s UK record.

McColgan moved clear from the rest of the field in the opening laps, and suddenly her main opponents were the clock and the conditions. At halfway she was in a strong position for a UK record but although the 30:01.09 time was out of grasp today; it was another fine performance and victory by the Scottish athlete who has been in supreme form all season.

Earlier in the programme, Daryll Neita (Marco Airale, Cambridge Harriers) triumphed in the women’s 100m, and Imani-Lara Lansiquot (Stuart McMillan, Sutton & District) was third. Both athletes ran a composed race following a false start from Jamile Samuel (NED) on the first attempt to get the sprint underway. Neita came through to win in 11.19 (0.8) ahead of Tynia Gaither (BAH), with Lansiquot clocking a season’s best of 11.26

Nicole Yeargin (Quincy Watts, Pitreavie) maintained her consistent form with a time of 51.56 for third in the women’s 400m; the race was won by Cuba’s Roxana Gomez in 51.18.

In the 400m hurdles, as home favourite Femke Bol (NED) won in a time of 53.94, Jessie Knight (Marina Armstrong, Windsor Slough Eton and Hounslow) ran well for third place in a time of 55.81. Lina Nielsen (Shaftesbury Barnet) was fifth in 56.85.

There was plenty of British representation in the men’s 1500m with George Mills (Brighton Phoenix) the first of them to cross the line in fifth in a time of 3:36.92. Elliot Giles (Jon Bigg, Birchfield) returned to action with 3:37.48 in eighth, while Archie Davis (Joel Kidger, Brighton Phoenix) was next in 3:40.11 for tenth.

Jeremiah Azu (Helen James, Cardiff) was the first Briton across the line in the men’s 100m, which was won by Yohan Blake (JAM). The Welshman recorded 10.28 (-0.3) for fourth position. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Benke Blomkvist, Sutton & District) was seventh in 10.52, while Tommy Ramdhan (Michael Afilaka, Bexley) was eighth in 10.60.

A 6.31m jump, set in round one, was the furthest of Jazmin Sawyers’ (Lance Brauman, City of Stoke) series as she ended the women’s long jump competition in fifth place overall.

Chris McAlister (Marina Armstrong, Thames Valley) was fifth in the 400m hurdles, a race that saw three athletes fall including Alastair Chalmers. McAlister crossed the line in 50.64, while Chalmers, who was in a battle with Ramsey Angela for the lead at the point of his fall, hit the eighth hurdle which ended his race.

In the men’s pole vault, there was an eighth-place finish for Harry Coppell (Scott Simpson, Wigan & District) who cleared 5.50m. He needed three attempts to clear the opening height of 5.30m, but 5.50m was attained at the first time of asking.

There was also a season’s best of 17.18m for Sophie McKinna (Great Yarmouth) in the women’s shot put as she finished the event in ninth.
