19 May 2010

World, European and Commonwealth medallist Lee McConnell is aiming to lead Glasgow to a memorable victory in this year’s Super8 fixture on Wednesday 7 July at Scotstoun Stadium.

The talented 400m runner, born and bred in Glasgow, will also hope to take individual honours on the night over the shorter 200m sprint, celebrating the reopening of her hometown stadium following an £18 million refurbishment.

Looking forward to this summer’s European Championships in Barcelona, McConnell is certain the unique competition format -which will see top athletes from the UK and overseas compete for the coveted Super8 title -will ensure a high quality build up.

“It is brilliant to be part of Super8 2010, and I am so proud to be Team Captain for Glasgow, she said.

“Leading the team in front of the Glasgow supporters will be a very special evening and I am aiming to lead by example by taking maximum points over the 200m.

“Stepping down in distance just three weeks out from the European Championships will be great preparation, and it’ll be magical to be able to perform at the centerpiece of the reopening of the Stadium on Wednesday 7 July as Captain. The other team’s won’t know what’s hit them with 5000 Glaswegian’s cheering on the home team!”

“It is also great to be able to welcome athletes from overseas here to my home stadium. Super8 is a superb competitive opportunity for the UK athletes and having our overseas competitors as part of the teams heightens the anticipation around what is already an exciting event.”
