MIKE MCFARLANE

Everyone at UK Athletics is saddened to hear of the passing of Mike McFarlane.

Mike was an Olympic medallist in 1988 where he was part of the 4x100m relay quartet that won silver in Seoul. During the 1980s, he won European Indoor 60m gold in Athens in 1985, while also being part of a European 4x100m relay bronze medal winning team a year later. This all followed a junior career which saw him win three European Junior medals in 1979 including gold in the 200m.

Alongside his achievements for GB & NI, Mike also represented England at two Commonwealth Games, taking gold in the 200m in Brisbane in 1982 and silver and bronze respectively in the 4×100 relay and 100m four years later in Edinburgh.

He later became a performance coach for sprints and was involved in coaching the 2012 women’s sprint relay team. London-based, he was still actively coaching a number of high ranking and upcoming athletes up to his untimely death.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, athletes and fellow coaches at this time.
